PART 1: Widening Horizons

Introduction
This is a time for  participants to get in touch with their new environment, with themselves and with each other.  From the beginning there is an introduction to the formative, reflective process as it relates to each one individually and to the group.  In addition, each participant is assigned a mentor from the team who will accompany the participant throughout the duration of the programme

Developing reflective skills A series of workshops is designed to facilitate participants in developing sensitivity to the possibilities for human and spiritual growth appropriate to the stage of life at which they find themselves.  This includes an introduction to the processes of human development and personality integration, sexuality, and an exploration of the meaning of reflective, creative living.

The world in which we live
Further workshops aim at heightening awareness of the context of the world today, of social, economic and political realities and of their roots in history. We explore the challenge of postmodernism to faith,  spirituality and religious commitment.

Pastoral placement
In addition to a three-week exposure in an urban, pastoral setting, there is an on-going weekly one-day placement which provides an opportunity to experience the realities of homelessness, prisons, women's shelters, Aids centres and much more. The purpose of the placement is to experience first hand aspects of marginalization not previously encountered and to learn the skill of reflecting on this experience in a small group.  The affective dimension of the encounter is gently explored; the tools of social analysis are learned and the lens of the gospel and Christian tradition is brought to bear on the whole experience.
